In this painting we find a continuation of the Cabalistic concept regarding the Tree of Life and the Middle Pillar. The two men on either side of Jesus represent the polarities of day and night, light and dark, summer and winter, left and right, masculine and feminine, heaven and earth, Boaz and Jachin, Ida and Pingala, Yin and Yang.
Jesus occupies the position of Tiferet in the middle of the Tree, connected to all other Sefirot and symbolises the sun at the centre of our solar system, a reflection of the Great Light represented by Kether at the top of the tree.
Jesus is the intermediary between heaven and earth. He has integrated the two extremes by completing the Sacred Marriage or Hieros Gamos that every individual must go through in order to progress on the path.
The interesting aspect about the crosses is the fact that they are Tau Crosses, not the normal cross that looks like an unfolded cube. The Tau contains a great mystery and is an important symbol connected to the pentagram and the planet Venus. It has lost its importance as the knowledge became obscured, misinterpreted, and demonised.
