10 THE IMMORTAL ENCHANTRESS:

August 17, 2024

MORGAN LE FEY: As with so many of the characters found in the Arthurian legends, different eras produced different storylines. Morgan was said to be the sibling of King Arthur, daughter of Queen Igraine and her first husband, Gorlois. She was portrayed as his magical savior and protector, a great healer and wise woman. An apprentice of the Sage Merlin, Morgan became a powerful Enchantress, some legends even referring to her as the mysterious Lady of the Lake and Immortal Queen of Avalon. It was Morgan le Fey that escorted the dying Arthur to Avalon after his fatal battle with his son/nephew Mordred.

β€˜She who is first among them is more skilled in the healing art, and also surpasses her sisters in beauty. Morgen is her name, and she has learned what useful properties all the herbs contain, so that she can cure the body ills. She knows, too, the art by which to change her shape, and to fly through the air, like Daedalus, on strange wings. When she wishes, she is now at Bres, now at Chartres, now at Pavia; and at will she glides down from the sky onto your shores. Morgen received us with due honor. She put the king in her chamber on a golden bed, uncovered his wound with her noble hand and looked long at it. At length she said he could be cured if only he stayed with her a long while and accepted her treatment. We therefore happily committed the king to her care, and spred our sails to favourable winds on return journey.’

Later legends focus more on her adversarial role towards both Arthur and certain Knights of the Round Table. She was even portrayed as having a fondness for Sir Lancelot and a passionate hatred of Queen Guinevere. Her sexuality and many lovers are also highlighted and mirrors the legends about the goddess Ishtar in her role as Venus. Because the planet moves around and appears with different lovers at different times, the unpredictable duality of her nature was highlighted. Ishtar was both a goddess of love and war.

Morgan and her sister, Morgause, mother of Mordred became conflated in the later legends leading to the confusion about her character and role. Initially she was a benevolent force that used her magic to help King Arthur.
