13 JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA – KEEPER OF THE GRAIL?

August 18, 2024

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold:
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land.

The Grail legends speak of Joseph of Arimathea traveling to Britain, either with, or without Jesus. He was reportedly given the Grail by an apparition of Christ, or in the immediate aftermath of the crucifixion. Joseph supposedly brought the Grail to England and established Christianity on the island.

Glastonbury Abbey and the surrounding area has long been associated with the Grail. Joseph is said to have buried it under the Tor, gateway to Avalon and the otherworld. The Chalice Well is another very important site linked to the Grail. A Vesica Piscis design further accentuates the boundary between the physical and spiritual realms.

The quest of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and their search for the Holy Grail originated from this legend.

The Dark Satanic Mills mentioned in William Blake’s poem has been interpreted by some to represent the orthodoxy of the Church of England and the priestcraft, not the mills of the industrial revolution. He also chose to model his Joseph on earlier paintings of the Druidic Priesthood, the original pagan religion of Britain.

Many symbols, events, and characters mentioned in the legends can be traced to stories and myths found in Celtic traditions amongst the Irish and Welsh. The magical cauldron is an universal symbol and not restricted to Christianity.
