“Then let the wine flow straight to my lover. Restore my strength with raisins and refresh me with apples! I am weak from passion. His left hand is under my head, and his right hand caresses me. Your love delights me, my sweetheart and bride. The taste of honey is on your lips; my darling. The curve of your thighs is like the work of an artist. To me your breasts are like bunches of grapes. Eat, lovers, and drink until you are drunk with love!” Song of Songs.
The Bible really is the gift that keeps on giving. How Solomon’s Songs made it into the Old Testament is truly mind boggling. The Poem is a celebration of love, intimacy, sexuality, passion, pleasure, beauty, wine and food, everything that’s supposed to be bad and wrong.
Yet there is an even deeper level than the obvious sensuality of the Song. If one considers the ancient fertility cults of Mesopotamia, and in particular the Sacred Marriage of Ishtar and Tammuz, then it is clear to see that Solomon and Sheba were enacting an ancient Spring fertility ritual.
Symbols like the dove, rose, and the planet Venus have all been used to describe the Goddess and Sacred Feminine. These symbols are also closely linked to Mary Magdalene, and one can only but wonder if the anointment of Jesus by Mary is a heavily censored version of this ritual union, the Hieros Gamos – Alchemical Wedding.
