Francis is dying, it might be today or tomorrow, the Angel of Death is hovering. Although I’m not a Catholic, and was actually raised to hate Catholics and view the Pope as the Antichrist, Pope Francis is a bit different than many that came before him, and more concerning, than the Pope that will shortly come after him.
The sad thing from an objective point of view, is that a large number of more conservative and militant Catholics can’t stand him. I’d be surprised if they aren’t excited by the news of his imminent passing. They think he is woke, seriously, a Woke Pope. American Catholics in particular have fallen out with him over a number of issues, the latest being JD Vance, the Vice President.
Mel Gibson, a staunch Catholic has openly expressed to Joe Rogan how the church has lost its way. They want more conservative policies, not less. They want an aggressive church, not a church that reflects upon its many, many, as in loads of faults. Not only the rampant sexual abuse of children by pedophile priests, the reason the previous Pope was fired, but the historical harm caused to millions of people that suffered under the cruel and degrading policies of the Church.
Persecution of the Cathars, Templars, the Unholy Inquisition, Crusades, Witch Trials, and Magdalene Asylums, are but a snap shot of the atrocities committed in the Name of God.
Much like Eurocentric Western culture and American Exceptionalism, instead of acknowledging the truth, they are choosing to double down on the lie. As a white Afrikaner man, I believe it to be imperative that we deal with the past, warts and all. Although I feel ashamed of the behavior of my ancestors, what they did doesn’t define me.
Why should I be afraid to look in the mirror and clearly and unequivocally state that certain behaviors are unacceptable. Racism, sexism, homophobia, religious and cultural intolerance, exploitation masked as hard work, lack of empathy and character, brutality, dominance, and violence without a just cause.
Am I a woke and weak man? Or is there a difference between masculinity, and toxic masculinity. I was conditioned to believe toxic masculinity was normal, it is not. Insecurity lurks behind the bravado and machismo. Treating women with respect and dignity, as total equals is not woke, it is wisdom.
The Catholic Church still refuses to allow female priests to serve God and their community. My work on Mary Magdalene as the Apostle to the Apostles, Crucifiction of Mary, delves deep into this almost universal fear of women and the feminine aspect of God. Women are not supposed to teach, never mind lead. This ingrained hatred is toxic, which is now being screamed from the rooftops with utmost glee and tiny cocky self assurance.
