Will American students be arrested for protesting against DOGE? Will they be treated as traitors, agitators, trouble makers? Will protesting against a Christian Monarch sent by God to save America be viewed as treason? We are entering slippery slope territory.
UPDATE 7 March: – Donald Trump has slashed all $400 million in federal funding for Columbia University over its handling of anti-Israel campus protests last year.
Meanwhile, Marco Rubio is directing the State Department to conduct a review of foreign students who express support for Hamas using a new process.
The State Department is planning to review foreign student visa holders’ social media accounts with artificial intelligence (AI) to determine if these pupils have displayed sympathy for Hamas.
Officials from the department disclosed the new program to Axios, revealing that the ‘Catch and Revoke’ plan is hunting for students who have been supportive of the group following their October 7, 2023 surprise attack on Israel. – DM
So if I a student shows sympathy towards the suffering experienced by the elderly, women, or children, are they Hamas sympathisers? Who is going to determine what qualifies you as being pro-Hamas?
Funnily enough, I’ve noticed my own posts gaining much less traction when I post about Israel or other related issues. Now I know why. Artificial Intelligence is being used to scan social media to suppress any unflattering content, thanks a lot Mark. Wuss.
UPDATE: 9 March – A vocal pro-Palestine graduate student at Columbia University was arrested and is being detained by ICE ahead of a scheduled appearance with a federal immigration judge, according to activists and his lawyer.
Mahmoud Khalil, who was the lead student negotiator for the pro-Palestinian encampment at the New York City college last year, was arrested Saturday night at his university-owned home by agents with the Department of Homeland Security, the Associated Press reported.
Khalil’s arrest also comes two days after Columbia University released a statement acknowledging but not confirming the presence of ICE agents on campus.
‘There have been reports of ICE around campus. Columbia has and will continue to follow the law,’ the Thursday statement began.
‘Consistent with our longstanding practice and the practice of cities and institutions throughout the country, law enforcement must have a judicial warrant to enter non-public University areas, including University buildings.
‘Columbia is committed to complying with all legal obligations and supporting our student body and campus community.’
The university has also advised students on how to deal with ICE agents, including by asking them for credentials and calling the campus public safety office. – Article DM
