LOOKING WITHOUT SEEING

The three mosaics of the Last Supper are unique because they can all be found in St. Isaacs Cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia. For those that can see, it is clear that the person sitting next to Jesus is a woman. She stands out amongst the other disciples because of her lack of facial hair and exquisite beauty. The Church would like us to believe that Mary is in fact John, even if the visual evidence contradicts this belief. They use excuses like, John was the youngest of the disciples and not old enough to grow a beard.

They also point to the masculine gender used in the Gospel of John to describe the Beloved Disciple, the disciple whom Jesus loved. Yet a close study of John’s Gospel and the Gnostic Gospels of Mary, the Pistis Sophia, and others, point to Mary being the mysterious unnamed beloved of Christ. The Gnostic Gospels refer to Mary Magdalene as the companion of Jesus and that he often used to kiss her, something which upset the disciples.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting of the Last Supper is but one amongst dozens, if not hundreds of paintings portraying a woman as being present at the meal. It is obvious why John couldn’t call the disciple Mary or refer to her as a woman. Yet John is the only Gospel that mentions the disciple whom Jesus loved, none of the Synoptics do. John is also the only Gospel to share and teach the New Commandment – Love One Another.
