THE SPY WHO LOATHED ME

Imagine the indignity of writing a post about a compromised president on Memorial Day. Today should be all about honouring the fallen and showing gratitude and respect for the sacrifices they made so others could be free. Freedom after all, is not free.

I would much rather talk about how great the president is, and how much I admire him. Unfortunately, as the military prepares to celebrate 250 years of service, I cannot in good conscience express my admiration, on the contrary, I’m absolutely horrified by what’s playing out in America, and I’m not even American.

Donald Trump finally broke his silence last night regarding the relentless attacks suffered by Ukraine over the past three days. He even called Putin crazy for randomly killing civilians and bombing cities. Yet he took the opportunity to castigate president Zelensky.

‘Likewise, President Zelensky is doing his Country no favors by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop.’ DT.

What must he stop Donald? Must he stop calling you out for being a coward, must he stop begging you to show some backbone?

‘Without really strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this cruelty cannot be stopped. America’s silence will only encourage Putin.’ VZ.

So Trump is upset with Zelensky for asking him to say something, anything, to make Putin recalibrate his position. Why the continued reluctance to deal with this madness? America looks weak and compromised.

BATTING FOR THE OTHER TEAM: Consider the following facts for a moment. When Trump won the 2024 election, Russian state tv showed nude images of Melania as a way to congratulate him. Why would they do that? I’m loathed to include images of the First Lady in this post, slut shaming is not my style. But why openly mock Trump on his big night?

And even more concerning, was it a warning, a reminder that they’ve got some serious dirt on the president? The entire segment dealt with lurid sexual claims, you can look it up. There are in fact photos of Melania from 1996 where she not only poses nude, but she does so while lying on a bed with another nude woman. What else is out there?

Ivana, Trump’s first wife, was Czechoslovakian, and her dad worked as an agent for the security services, whom in turn answered to the KGB. This is not a conspiracy, you can research the facts. Trump was on their radar as far back as 1977. The KGB ramped up their interest in the eighties and invited him to Moscow in 1987, almost 40 years ago.

Any sober minded person knows that Russia interfered in 2016 American election. The evidence is overwhelming. We have watched the president treat Zelensky like absolute sh*t in the Oval Office. Trump even stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, and guess what happened during that period, Putin took back huge swaths of land Ukraine had conquered. Trump is not helping with weapons, and berates Zelensky every opportunity he gets, as he just did again.

The unthinkable is happening right before our very eyes. An American president is batting for the other team. How this ends is a mystery to me. Will Trump completely wash his hands of this brutal and unjust war like Pontius Pilate did to Jesus, or will he stand up and do what’s right?

TALK IS CHEAP: There are two problems with the notion that Trump has finally seen the light about the Russian leader. First, he’s never been keen to criticize Putin. Second, the Russian leader’s ruthlessness in waging war is hardly new, three years after an unprovoked and illegal invasion that has killed tens of thousands of civilians and sparked international war crimes arrest warrants.

This is why it’s risky to take Trump’s weekend rhetoric at face value. His comments served a political purpose in deflecting questions from journalists about his views on the latest atrocity in Ukraine. And he got good headlines on Memorial Day for getting tough on Putin. But recent history shows that once the moment passes, the president often moves onto something else.

“Talk is cheap, and we have been waiting for action,” former senior US national intelligence official Beth Sanner told CNN’s Phil Mattingly on Monday. “You have to pressure the party that’s a problem.”

“Putin doesn’t believe that Trump is going to follow through,” Sanner said.

UPDATE 27/5 – TRUMP HAS YET TO MAKE A MOVE: President Donald Trump delivered a fresh warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin after the Russians spent the past few days showering Ukraine with missile and drone strikes.

‘What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if it weren’t for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD,’ Trump posted to Truth Social Tuesday. ‘He’s playing with fire!’

Over the weekend Trump grew publicly frustrated with Putin, who he had spoken to on the phone for two hours the previous Monday, coming away from the conversation saying he thought it to be productive.

But there was no progress made in concluding the war – with Russia escalating its attacks on Ukraine thoughout the weekend, pummelling the country with drone strikes.

Ukrainian officials estimated around 900 drones were launched by Russia in attacks from Friday through Sunday nights, the Associated Press reported.

Trump said Sunday that he was ‘absolutely’ considering more sanctions on Russia in response.

On Monday, Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Senate’s president pro tempore, encouraged Trump to make that move.

‘I’ve had enuf of Putin killing innocent ppl. Pres Trump Take action AT LEAST SANCTIONS,’ the 91-year-old Iowa Republican posted on X.

South Carolina’s Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham echoed Trump’s frustrations with Putin in a post Tuesday – though didn’t explicitly call for sanctions.

‘I appreciate all that President Donald Trump has done to try to end this terrible war. But to end any war, you must have willing partners. As of yet, Putin is not willing,’ Graham said.

‘As to Putin: we must remember this is the man who facilitated the Assad Regime in dropping barrel bombs from helicopters on innocent civilians and intentionally targeted hospitals in Syria,’ Graham said. ‘The same barbaric behavior is playing out in Ukraine. To the Russian people: Putin is leading you into the abyss.’

He noted how Russia’s economy was now smaller than Italy’s, tens of thousands of Russian soldiers are killed and wounded and the country is more ‘isolated than ever.’

‘This doesn’t make Russia great. It makes it a pariah state,’ Graham said. ‘You, the Russian people and military, can do better.’

Trump has yet to make that move.

UPDATE 28/5 BLAH BLAH BLAH: President Donald Trump said he’ll know in a fortnight whether his Russian counterpart is “tapping us along,” vowing a change in course if he determines Vladimir Putin is not serious about achieving peace in Ukraine.

But Trump declined to specify what actions he might consider to punish Russia, insisting instead his new harsh language toward Moscow should speak for itself. And he voiced concern that potential new sanctions on Russia could jeopardize a deal.

“The words speak pretty loud,” he said. “We’re not happy about that situation.”

Trump in recent days has grown increasingly frustrated at the state of the conflict, which he once vowed to end within 24 hours of taking office. On Wednesday, he laid out a near-term timeline for determining how to proceed.

“I’ll let you know in about two weeks,” Trump said when questioned in the Oval Office whether Putin wants to end the war.

“We’re going to find out whether or not he’s tapping us along or not, and if he is, we’ll respond a little bit differently,” Trump went on.

Trump’s two-week timeline has been a recurring feature of his presidency when he is asked about pending decisions. He frequently uses the timeframe when questioned about actions he could take.

Trump said Wednesday he still believes Russia “seem to want to do something,” but suggested uncertainty in how serious the country is about ending the war. And he appeared cautious about slapping new sanctions on Moscow amid ongoing talks.

“I think I’m close to getting a deal, I don’t want to screw it up by doing that,” he said. Kevin Liptak for CNN.
