More importantly, who or what is God? Is God Our Father Who Art in Heaven, a man, a woman, both, or neither? Is God cosmic energy, universal consciousness, love, an unfathomable force, the Great Mystery?
Can God be directly experienced, or is faith in God enough to satisfy the soul? Is it necessary to believe in some type of higher power in order to find peace and happiness? Can an atheist or agnostic be content without ever having a spiritual/mystical experience?
Can another person tell you which version of God you’re supposed to believe in, even if they themselves have only heard about God, without ever experiencing God? What makes their version right and your version wrong? Where do they get the authority from to make such a call?
I like to think of myself as a Rational Mystic. For example, making use of the experiential aspect of the Eastern Orthodox beliefs regarding theosis, personal union with the Most High. This approach is akin to the Way of the Eastern religions and philosophies.
Yet at the same time, enjoying the more rational approach of scholasticism associated with the Western Church. This intellectual curiosity embraces the progress made by science, natural philosophy, and the Enlightenment, but not at the expense of the unfathomable.
Two different approaches that work best when integrated, thereby creating a bridge between rationality and spiritually, Science and God, a Sacred Science. It is not an either or scenario.
Many superstitious beliefs are hard to swallow, but the complete rejection of spirituality is not the answer, at least not for me. Organised religion should not be equated with spirituality. They are two very different approaches to life.
Just as much as I don’t have the right to tell an atheist that they have to believe in some higher dimensional frequency or whatever, so they can’t tell me not to believe. It’s a personal choice, not something to force down the throats of others.
Just as much as a purely rational approach to life is lacking in depth, so to is a purely spiritual approach. Body and spirit, earth and cosmos, integrated, united. That’s my choice.
