‘Before the Mother’s arrival, the earth was barren.’ Ovid.
Rome adopted the cult of CYBELE and her consort/son, ATTIS, in 218 BC. After a series of famines, droughts, and a pronounced meteor shower, a decision was made to bring the sacred black meteorite stone from the Kingdom of Pergamon to Rome. The black stone was a symbol of the Anatolian Mother Goddess.
Cybele became the most important deity and was even said to be the mother of Jupiter, and later still, of the Roman Emperors themselves. The Temple of Artemis in Ephesus also contained a sacred stone that had fallen from heaven. Christian legends report that Mother Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven at Ephesus. The Feast of the Assumption is celebrated on 15 August.
