THE AFRICAN MADONNA

THE AFRICAN MADONNA: ‘I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon’. Song of Songs.

More than 500 statues of the Black Madonna can be found across Europe, with the highest concentration in France. The Black Madonna represents one of the greatest mysteries in Christianity and invites us to Question the Narrative.

The African Madonna sculpture: St Georges Cathedral, Cape Town, South Africa. Sculptor: Leon Underwood. The Cathedral also has a massive stained glass window, the Great West Window, created in 1982, that portrays Jesus as black.

St Georges played a decisive role in helping to defeat the Apartheid Government and National Party of South Africa, culminating in the election of the first black president, Nelson Mandela in 1994. Noble Peace prize laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the first black bishop, served as archbishop of the Cathedral and Cape Town from 1986-1996. His remains are interred in front of the high altar.
