Donald Trump ambushed the president of South Africa during trade talks at the White House earlier today. What started out fairly cordially, quickly descended into one of the most blatant examples of disinformation and propaganda I’ve ever witnessed. Trump instructed his minions to dim the lights and play a video of a minority party politician singing provocative songs about white South African farmers. He also triumphantly waved around copies of newspaper articles referencing attacks against white farmers. Trump then mentioned Elon Musk, who incidentally did not say a single word, and neither did JD Vance. 

Disclaimer, I’m a white Afrikaner, and to tell you the truth, I would’ve punched Trump in the mouth as he was spewing lie after lie. Yet to the enormous credit of my president, Cyril Ramaphosa, he allowed Trump to have a go at South Africa. But as many a lion will tell you, a buffalo is a very dangerous animal to tangle with. Even though Ramaphosa must have been deeply hurt and also seething, he waited patiently to turn the tables on Trump’s bs. 

BUFFALO SOLDIER: Ramaphosa isn’t called the buffalo for no reason. My president negotiated with the old school Apartheid Afrikaners during the transition to democracy in the early nineties. He is an expert negotiator, and a billionaire businessman for good measure. Trump did not intimidate him. He has seen these types of small insecure white men before. Nelson Mandela trusted Cyril Ramaphosa to bring about a peaceful resolution to five decades of Apartheid. 

The trump card as they say, was handing over the room to the four white Afrikaners that accompanied South Africa’s president to the talks. The leader of the opposition party, who incidentally, is also the minister of agriculture. South Africa’s richest man, Johan Rupert, and two famous South African golfers. 

Each man provided their own unique real world perspective on the issues facing our country. They spoke of the problems, but also of the desire to see South Africa thrive. They dispelled the disinformation of genocide being committed against white farmers. But the trump of all trumps, was when president Ramaphosa asked the leader of a large trade union to address president Trump. 

CRIME IS COLOR BLIND: It just so happens that she was a confident black woman that had absolute authority to speak on behalf of black South Africans. Yes crime against white farmers exist, but crime against all South Africans is a problem. She mentioned how elderly black women are raped and murdered, further dispelling the disinformation. Crime hurts all South Africans, black, brown, Indian and white. Crime is color blind. 

The legacy of Apartheid cannot just be wished away, it requires hard work and to negotiate in good faith. Trump and JD Vance are two-faced politicians. They have an agenda. Todays meeting clearly exposed how they have a preconceived notion of events. They are biased and therefore unfit to rule on behalf of all Americans. They are obsessed with portraying white Christians as victims. 

Yet four White Afrikaner Christians stood in front of the world and debunked the propaganda. Trump absolutely loves golf and respects Ernie Els enormously. He has won four major championships, spanning from 1994-2012. So for Ernie to stand up and speak truth to power was a huge moment. Even Trump was taken aback by his sincerity and humility. Ernie clearly knows Trump likes props, and to drive home his point, took his South African passport out of his jacket pocket as evidence of his love and loyalty for South Africa. 

If there was white genocide happening right now, would I be writing this post from my home in Cape Town? Would wealthy white Afrikaners be telling the president that they are building houses for their grandchildren. Would world famous Afrikaner sportsmen be designing golf courses in South Africa if genocide was being committed against White Afrikaners? Of course not. 

THE RAINBOW NATION: What South Africa needs is real world solutions. Using white refugees to further a pre-existing narrative is not offering solutions. We need investment and the tools to overcome four centuries of oppression. The only way South Africa will make it is if all the races unite. Trying to further divide us will only lead to the exact issues we are desperately trying to avoid, racial war. 

Fanning the flames is a weak minded thing to do. Nobody is saying we should brush the issues under the carpet, but let’s at least be honest about what these issues are. A tiny minority of white people own more than 70% of the land. Yes black South Africans can vote, but they can’t make a living, which in turn fuels crime. 

Without solving the root cause of the problem, economic apartheid, things will only get worse. And if they get worse, civil war will be inevitable. So Donald Trump and Elon Musk, back the fck off. If you don’t offer solutions, we don’t need you. On the other hand, if you are willing to be dignified and respectful, you are more than welcome to visit our beloved country, the Rainbow Nation.
