Jewish mystics have warned that being an explorer of the supernatural world is a perilous undertaking. An example provided by the sages makes this abundantly clear. Four people started the quest, the first one died, the second went mad, the third apostatized, and only one had a true visionary experience of the throne of God. The ascent of the visionary’s soul is said to be through seven spheres manned by hostile angelic gatekeepers. These seven spheres can be directly connected to the seven chakras, and instead of an ascent, some believe it is a descent into the depths of self. Merkava mysticism is directly based on the visions described by Ezekiel in the Old Testament. The spiritual realms are not all fluffy and light. As there are dangers in the physical world, so there are in the invisible worlds. Prematurely exposing an untrained soul to these realms can have a detrimental effect and cause more harm than good. Of course the best way to learn is through experience, but when possible this should be tempered by knowledge, training and thorough preparation.
Ezekiel 1
15 As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction as the creatures went. 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around.
19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
